About Us
My name is Mary Ann Heinz, and I am a 1988 graduate of St. Louis
Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. I have
worked as a COTA/L in pediatrics in both p reschool and elementary
school settings for most of my career. My husband Greg has a
background in Mechanics and Electronics and works in the Engineering
field as a Designer. This blending of education and experience gave
birth to HandiThings™ in 1998.
While working for a large school district I found that the majority of
the students with whom I worked had handwriting difficulties. A unique
tool was needed that would facilitate the appropriate pencil grasp,
allowing the student to focus on the basics of letter formation, size,
line, and space adherence. It was from this need that my husband and I
conceived and developed our first product; the HandiWriter™. We
applied for, and were granted a US patent in November of 1999. All of
our subsequent products have been developed from the direct needs
encountered in the educational and therapeutic environment.
Since it's inception, HandiThings has
operated as a cottage industry. While we have grown and expanded our
product line and customer base over the past 12 years, we prefer to
keep production in the hands of a dedicated team of experienced
seamstresses and assemblers who work from their homes producing
products that meet our high quality standards. By having frequent and
direct contact with our skilled workers, we can maintain strict
quality control and monitoring for product consistency and
improvement.
